Spring 1 (2025)

Year 5

Our year 5 children have been a part of some amazing initiatives run by Aston Villa Football club this half-term. These have been incredible in helping to nuture children's creativity, teamwork, cooperation and physical activity.

AVFC 150 year celebration

Our children were fortunate enough to have been invited to the stadium to take part in a range of activities to celebrate the 150th birthday of AVFC, looking at the history of the club, football and the local area. This linked with our current local history study and helped children to gather more knowledge.

This also included a stadium tour, where children got to see behind the scenes of the club! We even got to see the Premier League trophy!

Premier League Primary Stars

We were also invited to the AVFC training ground to take part in a variety of different skill sessions where the children got to be physically active and build their teamwork and communication skills. There was also a chance to have our photo taken with the Premier League trophy!

We even got to play football with robots!

ThinkTank

As part of our science unit looking at space and the planets, we visited the ThinkTank Birmingham Science Museum. We even did a scavenger hunt to discover new and fascinating facts!

Year 6

Bollywood meets the Bard!!

This half-term, the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust visited Year 6 to show the impact that Shakespeare has had on countries around the world-including India. The pupils learnt about the famous works of Shakespeare -such as Macbeth and Romeo and Juliet- inspiring Bollywood movie-makers.

Truck Art

Have you ever seen trucks like these before?

These are the famous trucks seen parading their colours in the countries of South East Asia (India, Pakistan and Bangladesh).

Well, Year 6 were lucky enough to see inside a special van painted by world-famous truck artist Haider Ali, who paints trucks such as the one above. It took him over 3months to complete the van below, but the end result is phenomenal!

Children were in awe of the work. They admired the pictures of birds and mountains, rivers, not to mention the eyes...

Inside, they were able to learn about the impact of Shakespeare on Indian films and movies.

Yew Tree School's own Truck Art

It was time to make our own Bollywood truck art. To do this, the pupils used many skills.

They used sponges to place paint on special stamps engraved with patterns.

Here you can see patterns and colours carefully chosen by the children. These were then cut out and placed around a 'jig saw' piece from our special Yew Tree truck.

What an exciting day, full of culture, colour and conversations! The day ended with a famous line from the Bard written above our truck...

Year 4

Visit to Birmingham’s Thinktank

Year 4 visited the Think Tank to learn about the human body and the digestive system.

We took part in a workshop where we explored and discussed different parts of our bodies. We started by identifying our teeth and discussed how to keep them clean and healthy. We learnt about a healthy, balanced diet and organised different items of food into 5 key groups made up of carbohydrates, protein, milk and dairy products, fruit and vegetables and sugar and fats.

We learnt that the digestive system is a very important part of our body. Without it, we couldn’t get the nutrients we need to grow properly and stay healthy. Next time we sit down to lunch, we’ll know exactly where our food goes from start to finish!

In the afternoon, we discovered all the other different areas of the science museum – it was great fun!

Visit to a Buddhist Temple

Year 4 children visited Jethavana Buddhist Vihara as a part of their religious education curriculum. The visit helped to develop their understanding of the world's religions, traditions, practices and beliefs.

Year 3

Stone Age Enrichment Day

Year 3 journeyed into the past for a special enrichment day where they learnt all about the Stone Age. Many fun activities were explored, including cave painting, den building and crafting bone necklaces.
